Here's another useful site. Actually an ordinary dictionary may help you, or you can google phrases. Phthisis is another word for tuberculosis, pulmonary means it affected the lungs. It was commonly called consumption. A symptom of the disease affecting the lungs was coughing up blood and it was a very common killer as it was highly infectious. It started disappearing in the late 1940s with the arrival of antibiotics, but is still occuring in poorer communities. nell

Well I've just received my 1st ever death certificate and I haven't a clue what he actually died of! It's hard to read but it looks like - 'Phthisis Pulmonalis' Any help would be great :-)
