i have been told by a much older member of my family that my mothers grandfather was a gypsy. as i am finding it hard to track down his birth details i am starting to wonder if it is the case. has anybody any idea how you start researching gypsys or if there were records of gypsys kept from the 1800's? im talking about 1870 in actual fact but i dont know what way to turn really.

well the reason im not sure to believe the gypsy story is because i have his marriage certificate, and his death certificate. on his marriage certificate it says that in 1916 he was in royal engineers corps, so perhaps the army records could have more info about him? but i was told by the national archives that if i wanted them it would cost me about £50 or so because i dont know his regiment or whatever and they would have to search for me because of that. i think thats too expensive myself.
