The mistake may not have been in Ancestry. They can only transcribe what they see - I have had families running into each other on the actual census sheets. Then it is only YOU who can work out if the ennumerator got it wrong with his initial transcription! This is a great advert for trawling through the census for hours yourself - you could probably spot things like this! Anne

I have spotted a lot of errors on the transcriptions on Ancestry. Some of them look as if someone has fallen asleep over the keyboard and pressed all the keys by mistake - just a jumble of letters!!! I have one family who has a christian name transcribed as Deor A Hha (Deborah?) and a Martin as Machel. How would you be able to find those in an index?

Someone on my tree had the middle name Carter. On 1881 the whole family, apart from the parents are down as Carter. I didn't know the middle name was Carter then, so I couldn't work it out, I was imagining all sorts as an explantion. I was almost disappointed when I found it was an error.

Thanks folks. I will inform them. I still can't believe I managed to find them - I guess luck was on my side tonight!

Yes, do tell them. Ive sent them about 20 this week! But if we keep doing it then the records will be more accurate for all of us. You can only report names at the moment. If you click on one of your family's name then look at right hand side, "comments and corrections" and click on that to report the error.

I wondered if this has happened to anyone else? I've been searching for a family on Ancestry (1891). The whole family are missing and I was beginning to think they'd maybe even emmigrated. I decided to search for the son, Elijah as it's not exactly common. I didn't enter a surname, just county and age. A few came up and straight away I was drawn to the one with the correct parish. The surname stated though was Smith - it should be Lovatt????? I went onto the page and spotted the Smith family but no Elijah with them. Then I noticed it. The family immediately underneath it is my Lovatt's!!!!!!! They'd been input as Smith - so no wonder I couldn't find them. I wonder how many other poor soul's this has happened to? Should I inform Ancestry of their error? Many Thanks & Happy Christmas!
