How can I find out the service record of my Great Grandfather Alfred Atherton born in Stockport 14 Sep 1852, married in Stockport in 7 Jan 1878? Shown in 1881 Census (in Derbyshire) as a tailor - 1901 census (again in Derbyshire)tailor (journeyman) and "Army Pensioner"? A very confused Derek!

Difficult, if you don't know regiment, but he might possibly be in WO97 or WO363 at Kew. Have a look at TNA's website for information leaflets etc. It would be quite common for someone to join up for a few years, then return to civvie street. A pension would be unlikely to provide enough funds to support a man, so he'd take up or resume an occupation and you often have no idea he's been in the army at all. Brenda
