Hi Claire I have exactly the same situation which I was putting on the 'back burner' and concentrating on the English side. I have found the following website, haven't really looked too much at it yet but could be a starting point? http://genealogy.about.com/od/records/ Cheers Mandy |

It's good that you hav a location, that's an important start for German genealogy. You can get birth certificates from the registry offices (Standesamt), of which Hamburg has several (sorted by district). Here is a link to the addresses and phone numbers etc: www.genealogienetz(.)de/reg/HAM/stamt/stamtakt(.)htm (remove brackets) Try the genealogical society of Hamburg for further information: www.genealogienetz(.)de/vereine/GGHH/index_e(.)html You can see if someone else is researching your grandmother or relatives with a search over the German gedbas exchange site: http://fernabfrage(.)ahnenforschung.net/?sid= (Name is last name, Vorname is Christian name, Ort is location). You should enter at least a last name. Click on the Gedbas button. Church registers also record births, baptisms, deaths and burials. However, there are many of them so it's helpful to know the parish. - Many records were destroyed in World War II, Hamburg was a city that experienced heavy bombing, so this could be an issue, but you could give it a try. Feel free to contact me if you need any more help or want to translate something or write a German letter. Good luck! Best wishes, Heike |
