well........... Sorry to butt in.....but....... if anyone reads this who lives in High Hutton or Low Hutton, (used to be Huttons Ambo). My gt gt grandfather was also a rail plate layer & lived at Pear Tree Hill in a railway cottage. He was there at least 30 years that I know of. It was number 2, 2 down from the railway station. Does this still exist??? Thanks

Margaret Do you mean the Brafferton near Helperby? If so, my great grandparents lived at Thornton Bridge just outside Brafferton, at the time of the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Ggrandfather was a railway plate layer and Ggrandmother was the gatekeeper. In 1891 they were at Treblesyke Gateway and in 1901 at Wath Lane Gatehouse, both Thornton Bridge. Their name was Lowther. Hi Janet...Thats right near Helperby. My g.grandfather Thomas Wright lived there in 1861.71.81 until he married then moved to Castleton near Danby N.Yorks He was an inspector there, must have been promoted. He was a plate layer in 71.My g.g.grandparents Thomas & Sarah Wright were there in 61. Thomas was a foreman plate layer.By 1871 Thomas had died and Sarah was head and worked as the gate keeper.I know Castleton so have seen the cottages. Not sure which one he lived in.My mother used to stay there as a child. She said he was the station master by then. Will have to wait until 1911 census to find out more

Hi Margaret It looks as though our rellies were in the same area but at different times. I'll keep your Wrights in mind when doing my research and let you know if I come across anything.

Hi Janet...Have you got 1891 census.Would like to know where Sarah was at this time. She would be 65 so perhaps retired or even dead.
