I also have hit a brick wall. My grandfather William Gray was an abandoned baby left on a street in Sheffield (or so the story goes). On his marriage certificate he has Henry Gray (tramway worker) as his father who I guess must be his adopted father.

How sad. All I can think of is looking in copies of the local newspapers of the time; this would have been covered fairly extensively I imagine. I don't know if this would mention details about the mother or not.

i'm trying to help a friend with his family tree at the moment. his relative was left in a public place by his mother when he was only a few years old and he has never seen her or had contact since. he was taken in by a couple who also knew nothing about his parents. he obtained a birth certificate which showed his mothers name, so we have those details, but that is it. what else can we do to try and find more details. we dont want to contact her, we would just like to know about her. does anyone have any ideas. he was born in the late 1940's
