having looked up my ancestors on the 1881 census I am a bit baffled - why are some of the birthdates different to those I have e.g on birth certificates - is it a reliable source??

The birth certs are probably more reliable . Lots of people lie about ages on census !! My g.grandmother "lost" a year on every census !

Thanks all this does seem to be a case where having 10 children meant they forgot a few birthdates!!
