Pauline, Can you post the details of the family in 1901 and 1891? I think I've found your man but he's called George in 1891. Crista

Freebmd shows a Henry John HURST born in the New Forest registration district in March quarter 1852. Perhaps this is the one born Eling on 1881 census. It might help to look at Eling parish records, ( in Winchester) to see if his father is the same as on a marriage certificate. Do you know his father's name from that?

Why are you so sure he as born in 1854? If you're just subtracting his age from the census year, you need to remember that the census was taken ca 31 March each time (on a Sunday) so, if you were 37 in the 1891 census, you could have been born any time from April 1853 to March 1854. That gives you a couple of possibles in the 1881 census (depending on other names in the family)... 1. Henry HURST - 1881 British Census / Hampshire Head Gender: Male Birth: <1853> Eling, Hampshire, England 2. Henry HURST - 1881 British Census / Hampshire Head Gender: Male Birth: <1853> Southampton, Hampshire, England But perhaps you've looked at these and been able to discount them? Christine

It could also be that he was born in Southampton Hos but lived on the Dorset boarder. Close enough to S/ton for this to be pos as the boarder has changed over the years. I was born in Bristol But at the time it was just inside Somerset (My bit not all off it) then with in a year It became Gloster now its Avon See How Things Can change.
