I have my gt gt grandad on 1841 age 15 that means born 1826. I have him on the 1861 age 35 that is born 1826 1871 age 48 that means bn 1823 1881 age 55 born 1826 1891 age 65 that is born 1826, now I have just found out where he is buried and he died 1899 age 68 that would of meant that he was born 1831, how things differ..............

Hi Sue, I think I read somewhere that on the earlier censuses ages would be rounded up or down by five years. May give you some clues, but maybe he was just elusive about his age, like some of my rellies! Karen

the 48 in 1871 may have been mistranscriped (a swirly 5 can look like an 8)

Sue - age given correctly as 15 in 1841 in fact covers a DoB from June 1821 to May 1826 as ages of 15 and over were rounded DOWN to the nearest multiple of 5. Age 15 was used to describe anyone aged from 15 to 19 at the time of the census. Regarding the 1871 census, the age that you see could be an error in the transcription from the original form. If you have the correct burial, I would think that the age given is wrong. It looks like you need to find a baptism.-

also age of death is an estimate by the person registering the death - so they could be wrong

Hi Sue Have you looked up his baptism record on FamilySearch.org which contains the International Genealogical Index?
