The 1881 census is the main free one, at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp It is a transcription only - if you want to see images of the actual documents you have to look at Ancestry - see below. Also there is a 2% sample of the 1851 census at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bewickgenealogy/census/alpha.htm The 1901 census is available at http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/index.html You can search it free but have to pay to look at the entries. Similarly the 1891 census and quite a lot of the 1871 census on http://www.ancestry.co.uk You can search free but if you want to look at the entries you have to subscribe; various subscriptions are available. They also have the 1881 census with images of the actual documents and the 1901 census, and the 1851 census sample. I believe that the National Archives at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ are just starting a way of accessing some of the Ancestry.co.uk census data but I don't know the details of it. A few counties of the 1871 census are available on: http://www.britishorigins.com/ Again, you have to subscribe to look at the data. You can get a 72-hour subscription pretty cheap, but as I say they only have a few counties so far.

Hi Sorry am not answering the question you have asked, I`m taking a shot in the dark because of your surname, hope you don`t mind? The name Plews comes into my family history line, and I am curious to know, are you or any of your ancestors perhaps, from Derby? I ask because, my gt grandfather`s first wife was Mary Plews Street, and I am curious as to where the name Plews originated for her?

Ancestry are currently offering a free trial (two weeks). Click on the 'click here to learn more' link on the homepage. You do need a credit card (although I sneakily signed up using a debit card and they didn't notice). Make sure you go to the UK version. Some people have problems cancelling, so don't leave it til the last minute. They should send a confirmation of cancellation email; if not, keep following the cancellation instructions until they do.
