If you are looking at censuses, there are street indexes for towns over (I think) 30,000 inhabitants. When you get back home, however, it is very difficult to work out where an ancestor lived. Invest in a photocopying card (this may be your first visit, but it won't be your last!) and take a photocopy not only of your ancestor's household, but also the page that describes the area. BMD indexes can be hard on the feet. Censuses can be hard on the eyes. It's late night opening on Thursdays, so pace yourself. Bear in mind that there are 4 indexes per year for all but the most modern registrations, so try to narrow down the dates as much as possible. Write down everything you look at, even if you don't find anything, so you don't cover the same ground twice. Look at the displays on the first floor: they show you the sorts of documents that can be used to find out about people's lives. And finally, enjoy yourself! B

You can use pens - lots of people do. You can't use pens at Kew or some other archives. nell

Take a couple of pencils - you cant use pens there. Dont forget your glasses if you wear any. And dont feel intimidated, all the guys who look like they are old hands are probably as nervous as you! Good luck.

It gets very hot so wear layers you can peel off. Take £1 for the lockers and your own sarnies and drink as the choice is limited. Take a notebook to write down your findings rather than lots of loose bits of paper. Write down in advance what you want to find out and prioritise. The bmds are all on the ground floor, censuses upstairs - they take longer as you need to consult the finding aids and then load microfilm. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP - staff and other researchers are all friendly. nell
