A great site. I have found many of my Ancestors on this site. Hope it helps someone. You can search by Location, or Date, or Keyword. e.g SMITH. http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ Tony Oz. |

Hi, I tried out that site a while ago and I couldn't find any of my ancestors anywhere. My ancestors are so terribly elusive. One of them was a bricklayer, one was a general laborer (also listed as servant once). Would they be in the Kelly directories anyway or were those restricted to people with a trade (is bricklayer a trade?)? Best wishes, Heike |

Hi I think you'll find it isn't just Kelly's directories on that site! For those who have't used it for a while, it might be worth ditching your old bookmark. I found I could still get into the old (clunky) search but there's a much improved search facility if you go in via the main home page. Christine |

I think even brickies could be listed in trade. I've found a carman in the trade secti9on (lorry driver in modern times) A little tip, if you are looking for an ancestor with no discernable trade try the "Court" section. If you are lucky this may be arranged alphabetically or by address. I can only think it was called the court section because it was compiled with juror selection in mind. Ever hopeful of finding my watchmakers Janet |

THANKS FOR THE TIP TONY, I JUST FOUND MY FAMILY, KNEW GT GT GT GRAMPY HAD THE RUBBIDYDUB, AND GT GT GRAMPY WAS A BUILDER, NOW I KNOW THE LATER WAS ALSO THE UNDERTAKER - NOW HE LOOKS LIKE HIS PHOTO - I ENJOY THE FINDING OUT THE DETAILS SO MUCH, I TEND TO SPEND MORE TIME ON THAT THAN THE MISSING LINKS. THANKS AGAIN, LAURIE |

Karen, try http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ That gets you to a page where you can choose how to search. You're probably after the third one: key words. Christine |

Can any one tell me what criteria one had to fill in order to be listed in Kelly's? Was it like some publictions today (& of course the phone book) where one has to pay to be included? My g grandfather was a self employed printer, & yet cannot find him, or indeed any printing companies in his area in the London directories. Perhaps he couldn't afford it? LIZ |
