I took a lot of my stuff from from the IGI fiches several years ago and some from FamilySearch when it came on line, or rather when I bought a pc. Most of the information I later checked where possible against the original parish records and found it to be mainly accurate. Recently there has been an update of the on line IGI and to my surprise I found a lot of 'dates of birth' had been added to the entires I had previously looked at. Where these dates come from is anyones guess, but probably added by members of the church when they submitted their family trees to the temple. I think it a great shame that LDs permitted a migration of data from the submitted entries into the IGI. dave

Sylvia Take care also with RootsWeb and do not assume that what is on there is accurate. I have come across one particular tree that has data which I know to be wrong and others where relationships are "possibles" rather than fact. Make sure you verify things for yourself.... Lesley

Last night I was double checking some information that I'd got from RootsWeb.com on the LDS site. I found several names that had each been added several times by "member of the church". All had different dates of birth and christening! I have found Roots Web to be very useful - I have taken one side of my father's family back to 1540 thanks to two trees posted on there!

I have the same problem two people first and second name the same and born and died within a couple of years of each other, census have not helped much as both have their ages one year out both directions. But I do like the family history on line site more than the family search LDS site as there are so many inaccuracies on the LDS site, when you have to go further than 1837 and cannot get to the local records I would recomend checking the family history on line, there is a small payment (a few pence) for early entries but they are adding to the site all the time and you may find something. Some of the members do seem to have been a little "over enthusiastic" Must relate a story I heard from a friend of mine. Her American cousin is doing a tree and wrote to my friend to tell her that it appeared that my friends father was a bigamist. Turned out that there were two of them with the same name born same area. Be warned. Best wishes Janet

Yes, I wasted about a year on what turned out to be a mythical Tree. My 4xGrandmother appears to have had 44 children, several of them fathered by her own son before he was born and she bore her last child at the age of 69! When I finally had the sense to start checking the details, I uncovered no less than seven family groups and 10 "leftovers" that I couldnt trace at all. Do be careful! Even information that looks "sound" (i.e. gives dates and place of baptism) can be wrong. I always go back to the original registers to check. Good luck!

Hi Louise, I'm glad to hear that it's panning out. I've had some nightmares with it. It has my poor gt gt grandfather fathering children for several years after he died. And my gt gt grandfather didn't have any more children by anyone - not even a ghost! Gwynne

Hi Louise, It's an excellent site but be sure to check the entries against the original records. The IGI is subject to transcription error and some of the entries are guesses. Gwynne
