Sorry to take so long to reply, Trish. I've been pretending to work today. Burgess Rolls are what they are calling Electoral Rolls in Portsmouth circa 1900. There are separate lists for the different sorts of voters, including those few women who were entitled to vote in local elections. They have been published, by ward, for 1900 itself. Brenda

Burgess rolls and directories ought between them to indicate whether these are two separate families or a single one. My Portsmouth families baffle me with the paucity of christian names they use and the way they are never known by their given names. Good luck B

Hi Brenda Thanks for the info. I have already seen this and thought it was a connection but am now not so sure. I looked for a death for Mary Bradfield and could not find one - also the son is called Albert and that would mean George called 2 of his sons Albert. Thank you so much for your help. Hopefully when I receive electoral info and the other birth certificate it will give me some more clues. Thanks again. Trish

Hi Brenda His death certificate and all of the birth certificates state that he was a Rag & Bone Dealer. I'm not sure about him fighting in WW1. I tried the site for military records but nothing came up. Two of his children were born during WW1 so not sure if he did go to war. Trish

Hi Trish The birth certificate you have sent off for may show that the eldest daughter has a different mother. You don't state the period you chose to search. Does it go right up to the births of the younger children? Did George Bradfield fight in WW1? He would have been a bit old, but if he was called up and his soldier's documents survived, these might give marriage details? As he moved from Greenwich to Portsmouth, what was his occupation? Was it connected with the dockyards? I don't know how good the later records are, but they are fantastic for the 1800s, particularly for pensions. These might hold details, particularly of where he started working. Hope this helps. Brenda

GEORGE BRADFIELD married ALICE LOUISA. The childrens birth certificates all say ALICE LOUISA BRADFIELD formerly NORRIS. George died in 1940 aged 64 in Portsmouth. The death announcement in Newspaper says " loving wife Alice and son, daughters, daughter-in-law, son-in-law and grandchildren. Alice died in 1962 aged 81 in Portsmouth. The Thanks for Sympathy announcement in Newspaper says "sons and daughters late Mrs Bradfield. The children they had were: Emily E Bradfield born 1904 in Greenwich. Died 1941 in Portsmouth. Married in 1922 to Sydney Link in Chertsey. Annie Charlotte Beatrice born 1913 in Portsmouth. Died 1914 in Portsmouth. Albert Robert Charles Bradfield born 1915 in Portsmouth. Died in 1986 in Islington. Married in 1936 to Jessie Temperley. William Thomas Bradfield born 1918 in Portsmouth. Died 1964 in Portsmouth. Married in 1950 to Eleanor Susan White in Portsmouth. I have just wrote to Portsmouth library for information from Electoral Roll for the addresses that I know. I only found out about Emily last week and have sent for her birth certificate. Emily had 10 children and I have been in touch with 1 of them but she can't remember much about her grandparents. I have tried trawling through 1837online, freebmd, ancestry, familyhistory online, familysearch and have come up with nothing regards their marriage. I know there was another child but no-one knows her name. She married and moved to Chichester. Sorry to go on and on but any new input would be wonderful. Thanks Trish
