Helen, they are of different use. I love ancestry and I have paid for a year because I use it every day for hours. I can spend ages fiddling about with names and places and dates to come up with info on my ancestors/rellies or even their neighbours. 1837 is a more specialised site. You pay £5 for 55 credits (55 goes at looking at records). You use it when, for instance, you have a good idea when your grandad was born and where but want to get the reference for his birth certificate so you can send away for it and find details of his parents. 1837 is not a site for just browsing but for looking for specific reference numbers when you want to send for a cert.

Thanks Heather, at the moment I have a few days left on my Ancestry. com free trial period, I don't know if it is worth paying for further access after this of to start looking at 1837 what do you do

Hi Helen, look ups are when you want to find a person say on the 1901 census but you dont have access to ancestry web site. You can ask some kind soul to look them up for you on the Records Board. Some look ups are more specialised - some people have the 1851 census for Kent for example.
