I think we have all found the places of birth inaccurate on one census or other. Im fairly new to this but I had one lot who changed their place of birth for every census from 1871 to 1901 so I wouldnt place too much emphasis on that. It may be that whoever answered the enumerator at the door didnt really know where someone was born. Or if you moved somewhere when you were a kiddie you wouldnt remember living anywhere else.

Thanks Heather, I have a feeling the Wrexham connection is a bit of a wild goose chase. My Dad also remembered that his dad William had a trial for Man United so I think he must have been Mancunian! Would it be likely that somebodies place of birth on census would be wrong? Louisex

I thought that family looked pretty good for yours! An Ostler is someone who works with horses so I guess the term driver would cover that. I wouldnt go too much on memory of rellies being totally accurate. I spent several months trying to trace one chap who "definitely came from Norfolk" It actually turned out it was his father who had come from Norfolk. May be similar with your lot.

Thank you all for your replies, he was 23 on the marriage certificate and his father Thomas was a 'driver', I also found the family in Ardwick. Although I have found him in 1901 married with a child, it says that he was born in Manchester but one of my dads cousins is sure he came over here from Wrexham. The problem I have is that Thomas and William Edwards are both very common names and I don't know enough to narrow down the right ones. I don't know what else to do...... Louisex

Also, what age does it state he was when he married? What was his father's occupation?

Do the witnesses on the marriage certificate give any clues - possible siblings for instance, to help locate the family on a census? Carole

Hello, I am hoping somebody might me able to give me a few tips. I cannot find out where my Great Grandad was born, or anything about him before 1899. He was married 1899 in Manchester, I have his marriage certificate with his fathers name and occupation, but, I cannot track him back on the earlier census' because his name is William Edwards and his father is Thomas. What I would really like to know, is there any kind of searchable data after 1901 which might give me any clues or further information? I would be very grateful for any help at all.....Many thanks in advance. Louise
