Hi, I wondered if some kind person could see if they can make out a couple of things on census entry RG13 1289 for the Bentley family. What does it say after gardener on Walters line? What do the initials on Williams occupatin line mean? Also what does it say on Sarah Anns bit were any dissabilities etc would be? Thanks Kerry

its in a different pen though - but it could be either as 1 - meaning deaf and dumb or an idiot

As Shiela says, they are in a different pen - they were added by the census analyser at some stage and would not have been on the census form originally. Regarding the one in the right-hand column, I would guess this has something to do with the birthplace as no county has been entered - notice near the bottom of the page, "Suff" has been scribbled in next to Bury St E. Ignoring the first squiggle, I can almost see "Herts" but I believe Norton Heath is in Essex. Speaking of Essex, note further down the page that several entries of "SX" have been deleted and "Essex" inserted!

On some of my census 'I' meant Independent, or 'of independent means'
