George, have you tried historicaldirectories*org ? It is a bit hit and miss, but worth a try. I have found a few of my ancestors on there. Maggy

Yes, thats an idea, I didnt think of "hotel" as the same as a pub, but they would have needed a licence for drinks, wouldnt they?

George Have you asked at the record offices local to the area. Was looking for my 3x great Uncle (landlord) in a trade directory when one of the staff said 'hang on a minute'. She scurried off into the back and returned with a ledger listing all landlords for each pub in the area and when they renewed their licenses, how much they paid/ were fined etc. It might be worth asking. Are you able to get to the district and check the Electoral Roll books. The other is Kelly's this is a business directory I think but as I have not used this one I can't be sure. Irene

Good luck George - I guess you will still need her death date to do that though? The Online docs only go up to about 1858 so you will need to do a personal search or if you know her death and place write away to them.

my folks have suggested looking for her will as if she managed a hotel and never married she may well have died a wealthy lady so thats the avenue I'm going to try, thanks all :~)

Not an easy one because of the dates. You could try some old directories I suppose. They may have mine host of a hotel? You could look her up on FreeBMD or 1837online for marriage or death date and place.

Are there electoral registers for that time? Can you find a marriage for her on 1837 online or free bmd? Good hunting Joan

have another tricky London Hotel, my grans aunt started off as a barmaid in a mystery middlesbrough pub and ended up as a manageress of a hotel in London. Her name was Ellen (Minnie) O'Hanlon, never married from what I've been told. This happened in the 1900s onwards, she was born 1890 in Middlesbrough, any suggestions as I'd love to crack this one! Death year unknown too. Nothing else known.
