I have my GG Grandmother described on census's as being from 'Millsburg, Yorkshire'. Does anyone know where this is? I have tried google and GENUKI and have no idea. I have found some possible yorkshire births (lots unfortunately) but without knowing where it is/was, I don't know if I'm even close! Many thanks Sam

Hi Sam At first I thought of Mexborough, but there is also Milnsbridge (near Huddersfield) which might be a bit more likely. Regards Stan

She is the only one so far! I have her on the census for Stoke on Trent in 1901 and 1891. Elizabeth Roberts born Millsburgh, Yorkshire. Husband Edward Roberts born Openshaw, Lancashire. I have found Edward in 1881 living in Openshaw with his parents. Elizabeth and Edward's eldest child is 10 in 1891 and recorded as being born in Stoke on Trent..... My problem is that Edward Roberts is such a common name I can't find a marriage. the fact that I don't know whether it took place in Lancashire/Yorkshire/Staffordshire doesn't help. Again, children called John / Jane / Richard - all common names and lots of them so ordering a birth certificate to get mothers maiden name would be a bit hit and miss as well. I thought I could search births for Elizabeth's born Millsburgh c1859 to find her maiden name but I don't know where it is!! Sam

Agree with Chris when you say it sounds more likely to be Middlesbrough,if she was in another county

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 2 Dec 2004 02:20

I think its probably Middlesbrough.I come from there and its always getting spelt with an extra o.Try looking for her birth on Teesvalley indexes.com.Middlesbrough was in N.E.Yorkshire until they started mucking about with the name change.(Cleveland now Teesside).Much prefer Yorkshire

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 2 Dec 2004 03:12

Why do you think she was born 1859.I checked for births of Elizabeths using 1859 Then checked for marriage ....1875-1885 non on Teesside indexes for this. You have to give a date for birth (no+ or -)so if birth date was wrong it isnt any good looking on there.Well you can but takes forever

If you look at the Yorkshire section of GENUKI there is a very comprehensive "Where is it in Yorkshire" page. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Where/index.html Also look in http://www.gazetteer.*co.uk Martin

I am taking Elizabeth's year of birth from census information -1859/1860 but I am aware that this could be wrong. I hadn't thought of Middlesbrough, I must admist that my geography isn't very good but I didn't realise that Middlesbrough was park of Yorkshire so hadn't even considered it. I have checked GENUKI but Millsburg isn't listed and again, I hadn't considered Middlesbrough so didn't look for that. Thank you all for your help, I will look a bit further now I have another place to try! Sam

I agree with the Millsburg/Middlesbrough theory -Up the Boro! It'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack on the Tees index though, as you have to put in a surname and you don't seem to have Elizabeth's maiden name. I had a look at the 1901 census entry, just to see the name Millsburg and noticed that Edward was born in OAKENSHAW, Lancs, not OPENSHAW. Apologies to any Red Roses out there if I'm wrong but I think it's in the Blackburn area.

Thanks - I must admit I just assumed it was Openshaw as I had never heard of Oakenshaw and last time I posted a query on here, someone suggested Openshaw so I just went along with it... I think I had better start from scratch with this family as I'm now thinking that the Edward I have found in Openshaw in 1881 is not the correct one after all! I'll start looking in Oakenshaw now I know where it is. Thank you Sam

Hi Sam, Don't want to stress you even more but after looking at the image I think it looks like Millsbury rather than Millsberg. Dawn
