Through the generous help of gr members I have managed to find my gggrandfather, married in 1843, I got a copy of his wedding cert. Can't get a copy of his birth cert on line as he was born 1816.(Richard Remington). He was married St Lukes parish of Lamberth Surrey. All the family have been traced back to Lewisham London. I live in Belfast so I can't visit any records office, can you advise where I could write to or e-mail as my geography of London is zilch. Many thanks Jeannie

I live in Lewisham, but not sure if I can help. BTW, the civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in 1837, so you cannot apply for birth certificates before that date, online or offline, because they never existed back then. Between the 1500s - 1830s, you have to rely on the parish records of baptisms, marriages and burials as your main tool for research. Try searching for your ancestor in the IGI index at the main family search website, which is like a rough index of many registers.

Fairly certain the parish registers will be at the London Metropolitan Archives, but if you google Lambeth parish registers you will probably find out. There may also be a local family history society that has some indexes or transcriptions. nell

Hi Pamela Thank for your reply, yes that is my family, where should I be searching for Richard's birth? I have searched the IGI on family search , I can find his death and I found his marriage but can't find birth. I have searched till my eyes are crossed, and living across the water makes it that bit more difficult to get parish records, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Jeannie

Pamela Can I be cheeky and ask you would you be able to find anything on the 1901 census for Madilane Remington born Slough. I thought maybe I could trace her family to as near present day and contact some living rellies for info, she was the g/daughter of richard and harriet remington. Many thanks Jeannie
