I have found a g.g.aunt who was living in an Industrial Home in 1881 (census) listed as scholar, there are only girls in this home aged between 15 and 6 ( she is 13)with a Matron and schoolmistress. I wondered if this was a school like the one C.Bronte described in Jane Eyre. I know she was an orphan in 1881 as both parents died in 1879. Sue

I think these schools were set up to try and prepare orphans and disadvantaged children for a useful life. A bit of Victorian philanthropy I think! Anne

Hi Susan, if you have a name for it, try and find it here: http://www.missing-ancestors(.)com/ (without the brackets) this site is a list of "Industrial Schools,Orphanages,Ragged schools. Info on all types of institutions from last century." Another place to look is: http://homepage.ntlworld(.)com/jeffery.knaggs/Instuts.html which gives institutions in the 1901 census, but a lot of them would have been around in 1881. try also the Rosbrett Institution site: http://www.institutions.org.uk/ This gives lots of info. too good luck Bob

Bob, Thanks I will have a look at those web sites. Anne Yes, I think you are right, it cannot have done her much harm as she was a housekeeper in the 1891 census Regards Sue

I've got a feeling that some industrial schools were for young offenders, don't think you had to do much to get sentenced though.
