When did registration of BMD's become compulsory ?

Trying to find out wether a marriage was ever registered and wondered when the registration became compulsory. Thanks Clare.xx |

Births & deaths from 1875 (ish) but marriages should be there from 1 July 1837. There are various reasons why a marriage has taken place but it is difficult to find in or missing from the GRO indexes. Brenda |

Thank you both. I have a Thomas Niblett (Longford St Mary) and Ellen Ricketts (Rodborough) who had there first child Thomas in 1846 and for the life of me I've never been able to find there marriage on 1837 online. After 3 years it 's driving me potty !!! Clare.xx |
