For the London area, the Poverty Maps of London site is excellent, as you can compare the 1898 map of London with the present day map. Great for when areas have been redeveloped or streets renamed, etc. Also it gives you information on the socio-economic class of your ancestor - colour-coded from Black ("Lowest class. Vicious, semi-criminal") through shades of blue and red to yellow ("Upper-middle and Upper classes. Wealthy"). Most of mine seem to have been at the blue end of the spectrum!
