I have a marriage certificate dated 1853 .The husbands address is Park Street (thats all) and the brides address just says Stratford. The church is CHRISTCHURCH, Parish of St George in the East in the county of Middlesex. Is this likely to be Brides parish, Grooms or both? Trying to find the area. Can anyone help please? Grateful fo any help, thanks, Jean

Hello Jean, I think you will find the area is East London, north of the Thames. Just to the East of Hackney. You can find out where the parishes were on Genuki. Park Street is not in my A-Z. I suspect it used to be under where the Container Terminal is. The boundaries changed a lot too over the years and this was probably in Middlesex at some time or another. Good hunting Jim

There is a little village in Hertfordshire near London Colney that is called Park Street. That may or may not be of any relevance to you, just thought I would let you know. Liz

Thanks both of you. I didn't know if I should assume 'Park St' and 'Stratford' were in the same area . I looked for the whereabouts of the church 'CHRISTCHURCH' but didn't find it. The brides Father was a Licensed Victualler, I hoped to find his address from that but without more of the address than just Stratford I wouldn't know where to go next. thanks anyway, Jean

Jean, If you do a search for Victorian AZ, there's a list of old street names. Plenty of Park Streets there. Janice

Just had a look for Park St, Herts but not that one I think. Will go and search the street names now. This is one I'm really keen to track down, so will go for a look round now. Is Stratford an area of London/Middx? Thanks Jean

From Genuki: "ST. GEORGE IN THE EAST, a parish in the Tower division of the hundred of Ossulstone, county Middlesex, 2 miles E. of St. Paul's, London. Previous to 1727 it formed a hamlet in the parish of Stepney, but is now a metropolitan parish, entirely built over, except such portion as is occupied by the London Docks. See London. [By Cannon Street Road.] Does the marriage cert say they were married by licence or by banns - if by banns one of them had to have lived in the parish for 3 weeks. nell

I would have thought the one in St Anne's parish, Stepney. Doesn't say that Christchurch is in Park Street.

You are all so kind and helpful to newbies (but rather old!) like me. I will copy that list out and study the suggestions with a large map in front of me I think. I go to bed later and later these days! Slowly making my way back in the family, Didn't know we had a publican in the family! Have got back further than I expected to with this one. Its the dreaded JONES, so feel good having got this far. You are all great, Thanks Jean :-) P.S. They were married by banns so when I find the church I will know which area it was. Still looking!
