1841 and 1851 census - where to look up?

Dear all, are there any websites where one can search the 1841 and 1851 census either for free or for a pay-per-view fee? I just found sites that cover part of the census data, but not the areas I'm interested in (mainly Middlesex). Any advice or links here? Thanks! Best wishes, Heike

the only way I know is to ask some lovely people who own the census on Cd if they would lookup the info for you. You can put a request on the records board.

I'm afraid there are no easy on-line options for most places. But you have four choices. 1. Ask for lookups - but then you have to rely on someone elses work. 2. Go to the archive/library local to your area of research where they will have the local census for all years. 3. Order the films at your nearest LDS (Mormon) Family History Centre. 4. Buy the CDs when they become available I would definately recommend looking at them yourself - nobody else knows your families like you do and they would miss neighbouring rellies. Anne

Thanks for your replies. I didn't know there were CDs, if they are not outrageously expensive, I'd buy them. Could anyone tell me where I could buy them? Going to local libraries is unfortunately not an option as I'm in Germany. Thanks and best wishes, Heike

I bought my disk from 'Stepping Stones' don't remember add. so Google it. My memory is that they were about £30. If they are in the waiting to be published list then they are cheaper.

Thanks, I checked it out, the Middlesex census CD is about 34 Pounds. There was also a site where one could check whether a name appeared on those CDs and my family's name apparently isn't mentioned there so I guess I'll pass for now. I'm already amazed at the loads of information I found about my British ancestors in the past weeks. Best wishes, Heike

Hello Archive CD Books is another source for census and other hiustorical info. They sometimes have special offers, too. I don't have the URL here (I'm not at home) but it should show up in Google (or whatever) if you put the name in inverted commas ("Archive CD Books") so that it gets treated as a whole item and not lots of bits. lots of links to free census data, including some 1841 and 1851, if you search this board for "free census data" good luck !

Hello, here is the "explanation" of how the look up works: www.uk1841census(.)com/case_study.htm and here is the site where I did the lookup following that description. If you leave out the reference code for the census, you can also see whether the name you look for is in any other files like court records etc. Very interesting, but a bit tedious when there are a lot of other records: www.catalogue.nationalarchives(.)gov.uk/default.asp Best wishes, Heike
