I wonder if any native Wesh speakers and or persons with Shrops/N.Wales geographical knowledge can help me decipher a place name please. My 4g grandmother Mary CHALLENOR is recorded as being 'of ___ybrennin' in the 1816 parish record (pg 80 entry No. 635) of the baptism of my 3 g grandfather (Richard CHALLENOR) at St Oswalds in Oswestry, Shrops. When I visted Shrewsbury archives I was unable to read the first part of the place name. I presume this is cognate with ___ y-brenin. How many place names fit this format and where are they? What does y-brenin mean? Many thanks Barry Brisbane Australia

Barry, There's Gwern y Brenin just south of Oswestry. Crista

Well spotted Crista. And its only c. 3 miles from Babbinswood where the father came from, so it seems to make sense. He was a farmer and Mary was a servant. Richard the child took his mother's surname, so I presume the birth was out of wedlock. Many thanks Barry

Hi Barry, "y" is "the" and "brenin" is "king". Gwern is meadow so the translation is probably something along the lines of King's meadow. (I'm not a Welsh speaker but learnt it at school) Janice
