Hi, I have found my G Grandfather and G Grandmother on the 1891 census living at 11 Union Row, Mile End Old Town, with their 1st Son aged 2 months. All three were born in Warsaw, so they can only have been there a few weeks. I notice from the image that most others in the street were also from Russia/Poland, including several families in No. 1 Union Street. Does anyone know if there was some sort of institution for East European immigrants there? I have a suspicion that my family may hve been Jewish, although everyone in living memory was Catholic. Any thoughts appreciated Peter

I have Jewish ancestors from Mile End. There was a large Jewish immigration in the last years of the 19th Century, especially from Russia and Eastern Europe and the East end of London was a big Jewish Community. Anne

I believe that the National Archives has a section for Jewish immigrants that you could check out. Also if you google for info on Jewish immigrants in East London I am sure you will get lots of info. I would say that although there were a lot of Polish Jews there were also a lot of Catholic Poles too! My lot from Russia were definitely non-orthodox, my Dad says, "We werent Jews, our cousins on the other side of the river were though!!" Fairly lax view, eh?

I believe that my family were in Union Street in 1891 having also come from Russia. According to the 1891 census thety were at number 1. Definately part of the Jewish community there. Does antyone know where to get hold of the immigration records?
