Was it common to be married in a register office in the 1860's? Ive got 2 ancestors which were and thought i had read somewhere that it wasnt common for this to happen. Regards, Claire |

Hi, It was more common among those who were of a non-conformist religion. Gwynne |

Claire, One reason why people married in Registry Offices may have been that they were of different religions. Another may have been because they had been brought up say, Methodist, they'd moved, and there wasn't a Methodist Chapel in their new neighbourhood. Or maybe they didn't follow any proscribed religion! maggie |

Hiya I've got a registry office marriage in 1875 - they had been living together as husband and wife for 25 years and got married 6 months before he died - I think they only got married to make things official. Karen |
