My Gr Aunt was born in 1895 and she died in April 2001 at the grand old age of 106. She appeared in the local paper in 2000 along with her friend who was the same age as her! Sadly I never got to meet my Gr Aunt. I'm sure she would have had lots of great stories to tell me. She never married either, so sadly that branch of my tree has now come to an end. Jackie

My oldest ancestor was 90..... BUT my great great grandparents, James Edward Perren and Maria Frances nee Lock.... born in 1835 and 1838 respectively, I haven't found their deaths yet, so they may still be alive a kicking!! Wow, 101 though! Back then, that is a shocker. Chloe

OK. Alan -you win!!!! The article about my gr gr gr granny says "She gave us quite a "startler" when she informed us that in the preceding week she had herself dug up a sufficient quantity of potatoes for her son-in-law and grandson's supper." Another reference says "...the stately tread of the aged widow....would not have disgraced a young woman of twenty." This was written when she was 101 and gave away her granddaughter on her marriage. I'd never heard of that happening before either. Cath.

Yes, Im sure there is something in that, almost a natural selection. If you managed to avoid childhood disease, starvation, tiny cuts not turning into lock jaw I guess you were made of stern stuff. I am sure I would not have lasted beyond my childhood in those days - I had pneumonia as a baby.

Yes I think it quite probably is. I have been very surprised at the number of hubby's rellies that died in their 80's considering what's been said about people dying young in the 1700/1800's. Perhaps if you managed to get past 5 years of age you must have been of hardy stock and managed to live a long life!!!!!?

Great Aunt born 12/10/1886 died 22/2/1990, church every day, never touched a drop and remained single all her life. Even at 103 she could talk to you about any subject you cared to raise.

My Great Grandfatherx4 born 1735 died 1827 (92) - not bad eh. His wife died aged 87. His son, my GGFx3 was 86 and still working as an ag lab when he hung up his plough. My own Dad is 90, still lives on his own, does all his own shopping, washing, cleaning - lives 120 miles from me and refuses to move in with either me or sis. His mother was 92 when she died - falling off a ladder cleaning her top windows!!

The LDS have gone one better - they have a certain Mary Ann Caswell (Portobella, Stafford) who was 227 in 1881!!! Not only that, but her toy-boy husband was only 28 ...

I have a photo of my 3x great grandmother together with an article describing her life and the celebrations for her 100th birthday. She was born 8th August 1790 and died (from gangrene) 27th February 1892 thus making her 101 yrs and 6 months old. Is this a record??? Cath.
