Im looking for the marriage entries for Covall and Shipp, my great grandparents. My grandmother was born in 1920 and I know she had a sister who was born in 1917. I have searched from 1905 to 1917 and have found 2 Covalls but the numbers dont match any Shipps. Should I go back further? Was it usual for women to have kids late back then?

Have you searched FreeBMD which is not yet complete, or 1837online/GRO indexes which should be? It is possible that there were previous pregnancies which resulted in miscarriages, or stillbirths or children that died. Alternatively, perhaps the father was away a lot at the beginning of the marriage - if they married before/during 1st WW he could have been away on military/hospital duty etc. nell

Hi Helen, I've been searching on 1837. Do you think I should try going back a few more years. They've got to be there somewhere haven't they? Didn't think of war!

Do you have an idea of when these folk were born - most people get married in their 20s. Also, where were the two children born - that might be a clue to where the marriage took place and it is possible that the localregister office may have records which got "lost" on the way to the GRO. Another possibility is that the lady was previously married and widowed (strong possibility of the latter in wartime) in which case she would have married in her first married surname - or do you know it was covall from the children's birth certs? nell

I have been back to 1900. The children were born in Edmonton, I think, I havent got birth certificates. On birth entries it had Shipp as mothers maiden name. Ive found an Elliot George Covall married JUL AUG SEP 1901 Edmontom but no matching numbers in Shipps that year.

Another thought - is it possible Elliot George married twice - once in 1901 and again nearer the first of the children's births?

Hi, She may have been a widow when she married. In which case her name wouldn't appear in marriages as Shipps, Gwynne

Kerry I'd get the cert if I were you - she is a direct relative of yours and the birth cert will confirm the parents' names as well as giving the father's occupation. nell
