We have found a paperweight belonging to our ancestors, Couttie and Sons Madeira Cake, Dundee. The latin motto appears to read NEMOME IMPUNE LACESSIT the script is very tiny so this may not be 100%. Anyone translate for me? Also this paperweight has a coat of arms - can anyone recommend a site for explaining coats of arms?

It is the insignia of the Black Watch http://www.regiments.*org/regiments/uk/inf/042Black.htm Do a websearch on Black Watch or Nemo Me Impune Lacessit. Martin

I think it is/was also the inscription around the edge of the Scottish £1 coin.

This is the Motto of the Order of the Thistle " No one provokes me with impunity" Nemo Me Impune Lacessit. It was the highest honour in Scotland , second only to the order of the Garter. According to legend founded as early as 890 , but probably by James III ( 1488 - 1513 ) , it was discontinued after the Reformation. The Scottish one pound coins of 1984, 89, 94 and 1999 have it round their edge as a motto. Hope this helps. Elaine x.

It basically means "No one hurts me with impunity". Try College of Heralds on Google. Just a word of warning to the Coat of Arms collectors out there. Just because someone with your Surname was granted a Coat of Arms doesn't mean that you are entitled to it. There is a very complicated differentiation procedure to identify the Armigerous Person, Their eldest son, 2nd son, etc, etc, and If two Armigerous persons married their Coats of Arms were often combined.
