I now believe the Wilfred Ferns I'm looking for was in fact born Anson Wilfred Ferns. His birth is registered on Staffs BMD site as being in 1863. I've found his death on ancestry as being in 1893 aged 31yrs. But surely he should have been 29 or 30yrs? Is this the same man? It seems to be a year out. Could he have been born in 1862 and just registered late? His birth was registered in April, May or June 1863. I'm sure this is my Wilfred as he disappeared after the 1891 census and his wife remarried in 1895. I'm just a bit confused re his age at death not fitting with his birth year. Any advice as ever, would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks!

It depends on who registered the death. It may not have been a family member. Even if it was, how many of your relatives could you put an exact age to if you had to? Most of my death certificates are slightly out as far as age goes. The only ones I believe are accurate are birth certificates. Kath. p.s. If you ever get marriage certificates, don't believe ages on them either, as most of my lot lied on them too, either to appear older so they didn't need consent from parents, or to make an age difference between the couple appear less.

One of my lot knocked a couple of years off his age when he married for a 2nd time, I have a feeling he lied to his new wife about his age as when he died she gave an inaccurate age, he became 2yrs younger than he actually was, :~) so it could be that they had no idea of his real age.
