Hi Maureen, I actually live in Stockton and a few years ago I wrote to several H'pool Swales, not many replied and those that did were not of my family . . . . they thought!! It's the Whitby branch I would like to make contact with.

Hi Brian My great-great grandfather was born in Hartlepool and his name was Swales. His family then moved to Sunderland where more Swales were born. Trish

Brian, just looked in local phone book and there are fifteen Swales listed here in Hartlepool. If you want any names and numbers just mail me. Have you tried TEESVALLEY/INDEXES web site. Its Hartlepool registrars site and very good too!

Have you done a name search on this site. There are 43 Swales, born in Hartlepool alone (or are all of these in your own tree?). I used to work with a girl called Swales who's parents lived in Caledonian Road in Hartlepool, but for the life of me I can't remember her first name. Kath. x

Thanks Peter - I don't know of any links with Scarborough, only that my son lives there now!

Brian, don't know if this will help, but there used to be a Swales family living in Scarborough about 55 years ago, don't know the house number, but the street was called "Paradise", it's up near what was a merchant navy training school. peter

In all the years I have been researching my family history I have never been in contact with a descendant of my Swales family! ! Where are you all? My earliest ancestor was "of Farndale" in 1756. Later generations lived in Goathland (Beck Hole), and Whitby where they were blacksmiths. The line then moved to Hartlepool. Is there anyone out there?
