Familysearch - my ancestors aren't there - why?

No there is very little on the familysearch in reality, so you were lucky to find yours. The only way forward is really to go to the records offices now Im afraid. You can try local family history society web sites to see if they offer any transcriptions on line. Norfolk has a good one, though again, not everyone will be on there.

Thanks Helen & Richard for your replies. I didn't realise the site wasn't a full listing of everyone. I presumed that because I could find the records in the record office that they would be on the site as well - I was hoping they might have some added info. Is there any other sites that are good for finding records from the 1700's?

If they were around in the 1790s they'd be doing well to be alive in 1881 (though its not impossible). Otherwise, you will have to check the 1841 census to find them - this is available at the Family Records Centre in London as well as the local records office. nell

The familysearch website is not comprehensive. There are whole areas that aren't listed - none of my Warwickshire relatives are there, and although I've found some of my Gloucestershire baptisms, not all the siblings are included, and not all the marriages. Similarly, nothing for Norfolk. If you want to know what's included on the IGI you can google Hugh Wallis batch numbers. This will find a site where you can enter the county and get a list of all the parishes covered - you can then check whether its baptisms and/or marriages and which dates are included. Then you can search direct on the LDS site from there. You may find the local family history society has done some transcriptions which they will search for a small fee. nell

I have been trying to research my tree back from my 4x great grandparents in the 1790's. I have found some records that help me via the record office PR's and BT's but I can't find these on familysearch website. Does anyone know why this might be? I have tried various name variations but no luck at all. I was hoping the site might take me back a little further or provide some more clues. Any ideas?
