Don't know about an 84 year old, but they did have male nurses at that time, as I have a description of the workhouse where my grandfather was born in 1870 and it mentions male nurses. Kath. x

If you use the magnify tool on the advanced browser, I reckon it's been written as 8yrs. It's the yrs that looks like a 4 Sioux

Had a look - I think that it's supposed to be age 8 YEARS, though I agree that the enumerator has made a bit of a botch of it! Incidentally, the IGI index also has him as aged 8 years, not 84. Not that you can always rely on that either LOL. But, as confirmation, here's his birth on FreeBMD: Births Dec 1872 Ibbotson Arthur James Pocklington 9d 70 Cheers Richard in Perth (where it's only 10pm)...

Karen The LDS transcription has him as 8 - perhaps the original had a squiggle that looks like a 4 next to it? 1881 British Census Household: NameRelationMaritalStatGendeAge BirthplaceOccupDisability Robert St ST PAUL Head M Male 38 Eastrington, York, England Farm Labourer (Ag Lab) Mary ST PAUL Wife Female 38 Seaton Ross, York, England Joseph ST PAUL Son Male 11 Warter, York, England Scholar Mary Ann ST PAUL Daur Female 9 Shipton, York, England Scholar Thomas W. He must have been a late developer :o) A nurse child was the one being nursed, not the nurser. Are you sure that it's not a mistranscription? Lets have a few more details, so that we can check out the image too... Have you found him in 1891, maybe as a 94-year-old high-school student LOL!

Hi Karen I'm not 100% sure but I think a nurse child was one taken in to be cared for by the household. I don't think they necessarily had to be related. Jeanette x

I just found a household with a guy named Arthur who is 84. Where it says relationship to head, it says nurse child !?!? For occupation it says scholar. There is a 1 month old baby in the house, but I didn't think they would have males as nurses in 1881, especially not 84 year olds??
