Thank you Richard She does turn up as a domestic sevant in 1891, still married (then Mar Ann Allison) and living without her son. He would only have been 5 years old. I can't find him on the census either but I do have his birth certificate. Alice

She could well have been in service in 1881. Lewisham was in Kent until 1889. Here's one possible: Edward Moorhead abt 1821 C Mongham, Ireland Head Catherine Suainson abt 1840 Whitehaven, Cumberland, England Housekeeper Mary Cox abt 1861 Kent, England Cook Source information: RG11/0821 Registration district: Croydon Sub-registration district: Croydon ED, institution, or vessel: 54 Folio: 96 Page: 16 Here's a couple more possibilities from the 1881, both a bit younger than 20 years old though. Both Lee & Eltham were in the Lewisham register district: Mary Cox abt 1864 Lee, Kent, England Servant Lewisham Mary Cox abt 1865 Eltham, Kent, England Servant Paddington

It seems ridiculas that I cannot find Mary Ann Cox born 1861 in Lewisham. Maried 1881 to James Allison. had 1 son in 1886 Ernest Edward Allison. Remarried Ernest Cardwell after James Allison died probably at sea. (I can't find any trace of James on any census either born about 1855 his father was a brass finisher, also called James Allison) I have these records for Mary Ann Cox: Marriage certificate 1881 I Think I have her on the 1891 census but with no son. So where was he? I cannot find her in 1871 or 1881 ( she would still have been Cox I think. I cannot find her birth on civil registration index - I have checked and re-checked! I have ancestry but cannot find her. She really did exsist - my dad knew her and I wouldn't be here without her where is she? Can anyone cleverer than me find her? dad was a Blacksmith, his name was James. I know I have asked before but can someone who is brilliant on Ancestry look - maybe some transcription errors? Thank you to anyone who has tried before but i'm nearly beaten - sure something obvious could be staring me in the face alice
