My ancestors died in the 1860's in the East End during the typhoid eperdemic. They left the youngest children parentless at the ages of 8, 9, 12. Would they have been taken into an orphanage as I can find no trace of them in 1871, 1881, 1891. The only one I find as an adult died in 1913.

They might have been brought up by grandparents or aunts? At least you know one of them survived. If they were in an orphanage they should still be on the census. Orphanages and workhouses are usually listed separately at the end of a census piece so you could miss them if there's no index and the search wasn't continued to the end. Anne

I wonder if thats why Ive not been able to find them. If they were with rellies, I suppose its possible that the head's surname was given and then a lot of dittos for everyone else in the house.
