you could phone the records office in the district, and they will give you the local registrars phone numbers, sometimes if your lucky they will tell you which is the right cert for you,to order if you give them all the information you have. i have 7 possible certs for my grandfather and only durham and his dob so your not the only one that finds this. happy hunting sandra

Angela The only way I can think of is use as many checking points for the GRO as possible, as you say father's name, OK it's the same but surely the three of them won't be, mother's name if you have even the first name from a census, the exact place they lived on the census nearest the date. Surely this must make a difference. Sorry if you have thought of all that, I wouldn't order the cert unless I had at least 3 of these checking points. Good Luck Pat x

if you know his father and mothers name you could put this down as achecking point before ordering a certificate. Good luck! Jayne

Trying to get hold of my gg grandad's birth cert. I know the yr, district etc, trouble is, there are 3 likelys all same except on different pages in volume. Do I just take pot luck & order one, if it's wrong order another? His name was John Francis and so was his dad's!! There were 100s of John Francis' in the Welsh valleys at that time!
