Looking at occupations of some people in the 1901 census I came across these William Jeffries - Metal music road voicer & repairer. Charies Jeffries - Barter attendant electrical light. Charles Fennell - Shop keeper colour oilman. Alice Green - Mantle maker Apprentice. Emily Green - Ruler (Any one got any better I'm after a good job.) What are some of these jobs |

My best one has been "Marsh Looker" in 1780 Sussex. |

No Peter, I was quite excited thinking he was an 18th century customs man but it turns out a marsh looker was a shepherd looking out for sheep in case they drowned. |

A 'Ruler' wasn't a boss of any sort, but usually just someone who worked machinery! I have a load of them in the boot-making trade! |

I figgerd out a mantle maker. She made the mantel on gas lamps (the top bit you lit) |

A mantle maker would almost certainly have made mantles for gas lights. The mantle was the little woven thing that glowed when it got hot. |
