Id say its the enumerator getting confused and they are yours. The enumerator had to collect in all the sheets filled in by the householders on his route - helping the ones who couldn't write fill out their forms as he went and then get them all home and copy them out again into the pages that we get to view. At the bottom of the same page there is an Emma King living in another house - chances are he's looked at the wrong bit of paper. Everything else matches far too well Zoe

Hi Kim, I can understand how Lewis became Louise but can't make out how Lambert can become King? My head's getting sore from all this scratching! lol Naomi

Ok, I just looked on Ancestry and it definitely says the surname is King but I'm so sure it's my Lamberts. James Lambert died in Dec 1881. This couple are the right ages and born in the right places. In 1871 the lived in the same houses, on the same road. How many James & Salome of correct age and place of birth can there be in a small village? Why would they put their name down as King?

Just checked Ancestry again and there is a death recorded in Godstone March qtr. 1892 vol. 2a, page 198 of a Salome Lambert, age 76 which could be your Salome, but this would mean she didn't marry a second time. Maybe the enumerator just got his paperwork mixed up and put in the wrong surname. Kath. x p.s. I know this can happen because on the 1891 census my grandmother suddenly went from being Ethel Clark to Elizabeth Clark, and her uncle from Chapman Clark to Charlotte Clark, poor man, but it was only because the rest of the family is right and the ages are right that I realised it was just a mistake.

Do you think that Mary's mother Salome married again to a James King, between the two census dates. Saloman could just be a mistranscription for Salome. Kath. x p.s. just had a look at the image and I think it probably says Salome - what looks like the N at the end, I think is an initial from the entry below.

I have a Mary Lambert b1834 marrying James West b.1833. Her parents were James & Salome Lambert. On the 1881 census, I have found James & Mary West with children Harry age 10 and Myra age 5. However there are two old people living with them, James & Saloman King listed as Father and Mother in law. This is now throwing doubt on whether it's my lot or not. However If I click on previous households, there are families of Lamberts and Creasey that are related to me. Confusing?
