I have just come across a brilliant site - Tower Hamlets History Archives - lots of info about the east end in Victorian and earlier times. Has maps and reports of the area at that time, mentions conditions in specific roads. I shall be back on it for hours now! Do check it out. Heather, It looks fabulous - Thanks!!! You need to add an extra w to your URL though - it took me a while to figure out why it was getting "server not available". I put "printers' into the search facility, as many of my lot were in that profession, and look what it gave: COMPARATIVE TABLE OF THE DRUNKENNESS OF THE DIFFERENT TRADES IN LONDON. What a scream! I agree Heather a fantastic site with news of life and illustrations and photo's. My husbands grandparents met whilst working in Bryant & Mays match factory - very nice to have a photo of it in the 1920's when they would have been there. fab site once there you'll not be able to get away from it : ) Much happiness Debi Just wanted to add that I used to walk past Holy Trinty Church Bethnal Green every day to work and never knew it had a BOXING RING under it till I came across the site LOL

Yes, there is masses of stuff in there we can add to our ancestors' personal files to give us a feel for the time and place. I must look up all the streets where my lot lived and see if they are mentioned in those reports on the filth!

Thanks for that wonderful site! My only sadness is that it does not cover Hackney which is my main interest in London.

Actually some time back I also recommended the Victorian London site and I revisted it myself today - boy it is brilliant. It has a sort of directory written by Charles Dickens with street names, police divisions, hotels and prices!, train stations and cost of excursions.
