Thanks very much for that guys. Geoff, how stupid of me, I thought it was some sort of latin - not short for caretaker. School Board London, that makes sense too. Many thanks. I have emailed the Tower Hamlets Archives to see if they can tell me what school was at that site in 1901. |

I have an attendance medal for my grandfather in a box labelled School Board for London - could this be the SBL on your entry, the body responsible for the school? Judith |

Sorry, I can't help with SBL. Notice before the word "Schoolkeeper" the census analyser has written "Caret", so your surmising of caretaker appears to be correct. |

Found ancestor on 1901 down as School Keeper at 1 Smith Street, Mile End Road. The whole family there and the school appears to spread over 16 more house numbers. (In the previous census he was a fireman). What do you think a school keeper was - the equivalent of a caretaker? After his occupation were the initials SBL - Stepney Borough of London??? And any ideas where I could find what school this is - I have googled with no luck. Thanks guys. |
