Thanks very much for that guys. Geoff, how stupid of me, I thought it was some sort of latin - not short for caretaker. School Board London, that makes sense too. Many thanks. I have emailed the Tower Hamlets Archives to see if they can tell me what school was at that site in 1901.

I have an attendance medal for my grandfather in a box labelled School Board for London - could this be the SBL on your entry, the body responsible for the school? Judith

Sorry, I can't help with SBL. Notice before the word "Schoolkeeper" the census analyser has written "Caret", so your surmising of caretaker appears to be correct.

Found ancestor on 1901 down as School Keeper at 1 Smith Street, Mile End Road. The whole family there and the school appears to spread over 16 more house numbers. (In the previous census he was a fireman). What do you think a school keeper was - the equivalent of a caretaker? After his occupation were the initials SBL - Stepney Borough of London??? And any ideas where I could find what school this is - I have googled with no luck. Thanks guys.
