I've just come across this one tonight - spent ages browsing through facsimile of the ORIGINAL registers. Didn't find my ancestors, but plenty of other people's, and lots to 'flesh out' the picture I had of the time they lived. Try it! http://www*historicaldirectories*org/hd/index*asp (replace * with dot) Sue (in NZ)

Susan I'ts a good idea when you use this site to try & get on when the others are asleep, you can really grow old waiting for it to load(and that's just the HOME page ) John.

Hi all, Yes, we do have broadband now, and perhaps as I'm in the Southern Hemisphere it's less busy while you Northern lot are asleep! LOL! Still, I can recommend it. Sue (in NZ)

Im not sure what you mean by the original registers? This is the old historicaldirectories site which just lists tradesmen isnt it? The original Yellow Pages type directories or have they added something?

Heather, The early directories show trades people, but the later ones show private residents, they are a wonderful recource. Jennifer

Sorry I thought you meant they had added registers of some sort. I found a couple of my ancestors who were joiners on there some time back but I have to say the site is a torture to navigate and I never returned! BTW, ancestry have the old telephone directories for private persons now - brilliant to look up anyone who had a phone for the full addy. I love the Charles Dickens (jnr) London directory which even lists train timetables for the Victorian period.
