Had a look on Staffs BMD for example: Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference Staffordshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1862 CLARKE Samuel WAIN Jane Cobridge, Christ Church Stoke-On-Trent 6/1/242 Staffordshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1864 CLARKE Samuel OWEN Elizabeth Edensor, St Paul Stoke-On-Trent 8/2/059 Staffordshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1865 CLARKE Samuel BIRCHALL Ann Talke, St Martin Newcastle-Under-Lyme C27/1/72 CLARKE Samuel HAWKESWORTH Selina Civil Marriage (Lichfield) Lichfield ROL/3/117 CLARKE Samuel PROCTER Mary Talke, St Martin Newcastle-Under-Lyme C27/1/77 CLARKE Samuel SALMON Mary Talke, St Martin Newcastle-Under-Lyme C27/1/77 (no Samuel CLARKs in the date-range 1858-68 - and none at all on the West Midlands BMD site - but that hasn't been updated for nearly a year, now) In the births there are 16 Sarah CLARKEs on the W Midlands site and three on the Staffs site for 1858-68. Really, you'd expect Dudley/Stourbridge event records to be in the West Midlands archives, rather than Staffs.

If you can find them on the 1861 census that will give you the first wife's name or if Sam is already a widower, you know she was dead before then. It may have Sarah's birth. nell

Helen I'd start by searching on FreeBMD http://freebmd*.rootsweb*.com/cgi/search*.pl remove * to use and scroll down to find search form. If you don't find the references there, you will have to look on the GRO indexes, either on microfiche at various libraries/records offices, or at the Family Records Centre, or if you don't mind paying, online at www*1837online*com - replace * with. nell

Hi. In 1869 my 2xGreatgrandfather Samuel Clarke married my 2xggmother Hannah Fox in Kingswinford, Staffs. Sam was a 25 yr old widower. He may have had a daughter Sarah, from this 1st marriage. Can anyone advise on the best way of finding the 1st marriage, Sarah's (possible) birth and his wife's death, in a timescale from about 1860 (Sam was b in 1843) through to about 1868, somewhere in the Dudley / Stourbridge area, given that the e on Clark comes and goes at the whim of the registrar. Is this possible? Thank you Helen
