Jane People could change their name by changing their name - there is no legal procedure involved, if you just let everyone know that you are now Fred Stinker instead of Tom Stinker, or Wally Jones instead of Wally Smith. People could change their names by deed poll, and you can find info about this here, but it isn't compulsory: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/name/ nell

Has anyone else came across annoying ancestors who keep changing their name eg Carl Blomberg 1868 Charles Ludwig Blomberg 1894 Charles Bloomfield 1901 charles leonard john richard colston bloomfield-on death in 1947. The above is all the same person Some of his children also changed their names from Blomberg to Bloomfield seemingly at will( but not all of them). i understand these "ancesters" of mine wanted to fit in but its driving me nuts. To do this name changing did they have to apply somewhere or were the rules different then Very confused Jane
