Here's my situation, i'm trying to find out about my great grandfather on my mothers side. I've found his details on the 1901 census, after he was married and after my grandfather was born he ran off with another woman and was never heard of again, any ideas how i would go about trying to find out what happened to him? If he got re-married or when where he died? Thanks for any tips

If he re-married he would have either got a divorce or waited for his existing wife to die. Information about tracing divorces here: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/divorce/step2.htm Any future marriage will be in the GRO indexes for marriages, and his death will be in the GRO indexes for deaths. There are no quick ways to find these until the 20th century indexes are all on FreeBMD, so you will have to go through the indexes quarter by quarter year by year. Unless you have some clues to narrow things down - a 2nd marriage would be after any divorce you find for example, then its going to be a slog. Did he have a profession in which case he might be listed in a yearbook/directory? nell

I'm in the same boat. My grandfather left his wife and kids (including my dad) in the 1920's. We know he went to Hastings but he was only seen once after that, just after his wife died in 1931. I've been trying to find when and where he died for the last 18 months. Put a message on the Trying to Find board. I've found the cheapest way of searching when you haven't any idea of a date is to go to an LDS family history centre and look through the St. Catherine's index.(they don't charge anything). Its a long slow job, but cheaper than using 1837online, which will cost between 5p and 10p for every page you look at and there will be a minimum of 4 pages per year. On saying this, I've looked several times from 1931 to 1981 when my grandad would have been 100 years old and still not found his death. Just keep hoping. Kath. x
