My grandfathers ww1 medal card inforamtion states that his british star and victory medals were returned 1917, but re-issued in 1929!!! This seems odd to me and have no explanation, does anyone know if this was common - any ideas or suggestions on how to discover why?

Michelle, I do not think that the campaign medals (War Medal, Victory Medal, etc) were issued until after the war, in the 1920's. Maybe the reference to 1917 was when he was serving in a particular theatre of war to have earned his medals? Ian

Maybe he was on active service and they were sent to the Army HQ but were never actually issued to the soldier concerned. Then if the soldier moved on and couldn't be located they could have been returned to the office for a more opportune time to issue them.

The design of the Victory medal includes the words THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914 - 1919 so I don't think anyone could have received one before the war was over. Judith

Julie, Campaign medals were not issued during the war, but after. They were posted in a box to the recipient (or his surviving next of kin) including a receipt which was supposed to be returned to the MOD. They were not awarded during the conflict nor sent to the serviceman in the field. Gallantry medals were awarded during service but were usually presented to the serviceman at a special ceremony, or in the case of a VC, by the King. Ian

Really the only way to find out is his record,if there was any correspondence it should be there,in my G/F's OZ records are letters relating to him asking about receiving a particular medal in the 1930's. John.

My gt grandfather was killed on the Somme in 1916. His medal card seems to indicate award of the Victory medal. Does anybody know whether this was awarded posthumously? David
