Thankyou folks, It is a long service and good conduct medal. Think Gt Grandfather wuold be sad to see it looking all tarnished!.. the Meritorious one, given at a later date seems ok. Lovely treasures!..

Hi Christine, If the medal is a service medal,my husband used to clean his medals,by either dipping them in a glass of coke,or toothpaste which is non abrasive, using an old toothbrush, rinse off in warm water, and polish up with a soft cloth. You will find many an ex serviceman, who have their little and cheap ways of cleaning medals. I hasten to add these are service medals,so cant comment about any others you might have. Hope this tip helps. regards trish.

Not sure personally as housework is not my thing at all. If I was you, I would check it out with a good local antique dealer or maybe the British Legion. Louise

Am wondering if it would be advisable to try and clean a medal, which is going rather black!.. If so, what should I use?..
