Louise, It is a general cleaner - washes floors, tidies up, dusts. Often employed as office cleaners after hours. A 'Mrs Mop' ! Ian

I think a Charwoman was a bit lower than a cleaner! My Grandmother lost her mum at the age of 13 in 1909. At that tender age she became a char. When she was bringing me up in the 50's and 60's she told me of the hard life of a char, up at 5am, clearing the ashes from the fireplace, blackleading grates, whitening the front steps, a 12 or 13 hour day. She saw promotion to Laundress in 1912 as a step up
